Ammonia’s big future in fuels and fertiliser

Ammonia could become the basis of the future of totally sustainable energy and fertiliser. Until now, production of ammonia, has been energy intensive. When based on fossil fuels this doesn’t sit well for the future which is unfolding. Douglas MacFarlane and his team have developed a new highly efficient way of producing ammonia using ionic liquids. This breaks the link with fossil fuels and production of harmful carbon dioxide. The additional benefit is ammonia can be safely transported and then split to form hydrogen, a valuable and clean fuel. When burnt, the only by-product is water! Douglas MacFarlane has been awarded the 2018 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in recognition of his discoveries in renewable energy conversion.
